WHY PLACENCIA?
Belize is set into 6 districts, namely Toledo, Stann Creek, Belize, Cayo, orange walk Corozal. Placencia at the tip of a finger like peninsula of the same name is just one of those villages that people visit and within 48 hours feel like family. It’s atmosphere just let’s you feel free safe and in a little bit of heaven. Visiting Placencia and it’s wonderful beaches is the barefoot experience we all should experience once in a lifetime and at the very least spend time wondering how you can revisit or get back there. The really lucky ones get talking to a real estate agent, a local landowner or just buy a condo so they can keep there little piece of paradise.
The best beaches in Belize a spectacular stretch of sand that lines a pretty colorful coast no high-rises yet on this coast line but an array of accommodation from hut to hotel and luxury resort to private home. The fingelike shape of the peninsula has the Caribbean waters and sandy beaches on one side and the beautiful lagoon with the cockscomb Maya mountains in the distance , all in all any way you look it’s a picture postcard, in fact, stand on two feet and pivot round and then you will see a whole rack of picture postcards.
The village itself on the southern tip of the peninsula is a laid back place with a moving crowd of locals and visitors alike who have a regular weekly movements schedule, for instance early in the morning you will meet them at the point catching up on local gossip and checking out the weather for the day.
Later they all go about their business:- off to work at the resorts, hotels, or fishing for the local co-op or shops ,bars and restaurants, maybe see the high school kids off on the boat to school across the lagoon, take a tour of visitors snorkeling or into the jungle for an adventure. If they aren’t on the early schedule they may be chillin with a local breakfast and then to the main supermarket where they can catch up on round two of the morning gossip and news.
You see Placencia only has a monthly newspaper ! and after all local news is more colorful. There are over 75 properties offering all range of rooms and so when you have chosen your accommodation the and you can choose your vacation lifestyle, visitors are predominantly Americans there are a few
Europeans more in the summer months and some central and southern American visitors, don’t forget the Belizean visitors they love to holiday at Placencia too.
If you are more one to paint ,read a book hang in a hammock or take long walks, then you can drop right out of the village life and easily live quietly on your own. If however you are the party animal then you will need to check the schedule it seems the crowd moves around the village to different entertainment events such as Placencia's famous Horseshoe Tournament at Sugar Reef on Saturday afternoons, The Local Soccer league match at the village ball field on Sunday afternoons followed by a live band at the beach on Sunday evenings, right back To “Croon on the Lagoon” Karaoke on Wednesday nights at Sugar Reef and a Live band at the point on Friday nights.
Water activities are of course the premier activity in the area and where better to be based than on the coast and surrounded by the greatest snorkeling sites in Belize Sailing is very popular here too and if you like lobster or competitive fishing then the fest every third week in June is the time to come. Placencia is just Placencia and if you love it you simply wont want to leave it in fact we didn’t.
